Ladin culture in Val di Fassa

The Ladin culture settled in the Alpine lands of Trentino more than 2000 years ago, when this area way populated by Rhaetic and Celtic tribes. Later, the Romans decided to conquer this area, making it part of their empire. The Ladin culture gradually formed with the passing of time, also due to the constant use of the Rhaeto-Romance language which was shared, and which continues to be shared by the population.

Many centuries later, after many wars which saw the Dolomites as a battleground, the Ladin language was recognised as an official language, specifically in the Fascist period. During the 1950s, politicians decided to develop a policy of protection for the Ladin language and culture, which still exists throughout the Trentino region.
